When a Poem Gets Few Reads

By Elton Camp

Although I am hardly a bard,

On my poem I worked so hard

The best words I tried to choose

And trite expressions not to use

When finally I had got through

And done the best that I knew,

I posted it onto the poetry site

Hoping it might bring delight

Several hours later I felt so low

Not even one person did there go

Days later, it was read by just two

I felt sad that readers were so few

But my writing it was not a mistake

Lack of interest is a chance you take

After all, how many folks can say,

“I wrote a poem back on that day.”

Nice poem Elton. I'm glad I can be the first to comment on it, too. I'm not sure if this is a general comment on a lack of reads here on the cafe, or a satire on how people are more caught up on getting recognition rather than writing for the pleasure and craft. Maybe I like this so much precisely because of that ambiguity. I think the last line in particular holds the message. "I wrote a poem back on that day". And regardless of whether you get 1 read or 1000, surely that is the point? Nice work.
