It Seemed a Day Without End

By Elton Camp

It was a day that never would end

For a start, too early did it begin

The alarm clock I didn’t set right

At an early hour it gave a fright

It got me so wide awake at four

That I couldn’t sleep any more

Decided to get a start on the day,

Breakfast I’ll get out of the way

I eased up not to awake spouse

But it was too dark in the house

So, across the room I started to go

On the dresser, I stumped my toe

Eggs from the refrigerator door

I promptly dropped on the floor.

Bacon I cooked in the microwave

It burned, much too bad to save

The bread for toast was moldy green

I’m sure that you know what I mean.

Bowl of cereal should be all right

But the box was empty-not a bite.

To take a shower I went to see about

But no. The water heater had gone out.

Repairman agreed to come that day

As long as at home I would stay.

My wife came in with an angry glare

“To get up so early, how do you dare!

I was sleeping safe and sound

But heard you bumbling around.”

“And so ‘I forgot’ you can’t say,

My brother is visiting us today.”

The only times that he does show

Is when his funds are running low

He is always such a winner

Arrives just in time for dinner

He talks and gabs some more

With money, he’s out the door

I settle down to watch TV

Maybe a movie I can see

One gets about halfway gone

And then I hear the phone.

Daughter’s car has broke down

She needs me to come around

She’s sorry that it is so late

But she has an important date

By midnight I’m back in the house

But my wife then begins to grouse

“I wanted you to mow the yard today,

You shouldn’t waste time this way.”

I crawl in bed and go to sleep

But the phone gives off a beep

“Is this Joe’s Bar and Grill?”

Asks a voice drunk and shrill.

So now I lie awake again

It’s a day that I can’t win.

It closed as it did begin

I was glad to see it end.
