Keeping the Sabbath

A poem directed only to those who profess Christianity.

By Elton Camp

One day a week on which to rest.

It is an arrangement that is best.

But just where did it all begin?

And is failure to observe it a sin?

Sabbath-keepers often take a delight.

Thump their Bibles and verses cite.

The seventh day, God no more did do,

But he didn’t tell humans to do so too.

For a few folks, this weekly vacation

Commenced with the Jewish nation.

The Law of Moses was given to no other.

It applied if you were a Jewish brother.

While the Law was holy, righteous, good,

Only one Jewish man kept it as he should.

Once the Law was fully carried out,

It came to an end without any doubt.

The very first Christians were all Jews.

To respect the Law some did choose.

But what was for just a single nation

Now had nothing to do with salvation.

That this is unquestionably true may be seen

By simply reading the words of Acts fifteen.

What is necessary is plainly listed there.

About the rest, we do not have to care.

Ignore the words of a church hypocrite

Who about Sabbath-keeping has a fit.

“Failure to keep it is such a terrible sin.”

But the restaurant and store he goes in.

His presence is the reason they have to work.

So, he causes them to sin.  What a total jerk!

If against keeping it, he happens to switch,

He will then claim, “My ox is in the ditch.”

Nobody should have to work without a break.

To say Sabbath keeping is required is a mistake.

Anyway, Sabbath “seven” does mean

Have a calendar such ones ever seen?

It shows that the Sabbath is Saturday.

Only man’s tradition went another way.

Sabbath-keeping is required, you say?

Then at least keep it on the right day.
