The First Woman President?A Poem by Elton CampThe surprising answer. The First Woman President By Elton Camp To sit in the president’s chair Only males have had a prayer. Ferraro and Palin had a shot But only the number two spot. Hillary may even come on strong. To her the Oval Office may belong. But another already broke the precedent. She was the very first Madam President. “Edith, I hate to have to say Woodrow’s in a very bad way.” The doctor’s words so direct Proved to be all too correct. A stroke had knocked him low. He didn’t know which way to go. Edith very firmly did decline Any suggestion that he resign. She gave as the reason why. “Doctors say he would die.” Edith controlled who came to call. Most men were not allowed at all. “How dare you the president upstage?” Thusly demanded his enemies in a rage. “To be president you have no right, So now get ready for a big old fight.” “You men are very much mistaken. Not a single decision have I taken. I only say what it is he should hear, That I am a usurper you need not fear.” To procedure when the president is ill Constitutional direction was quite nil. As long as the president did live, No transfer of power did it give. Her enemies could only complain. In charge the First Lady did remain. This was true: those who would her power rob None could prove she was not doing a good job. So as the first female president does she rate? It sure seems that she served in a de facto state. Edith Wilson president many do proclaim Although she had it in her husband’s name. © 2010 Elton CampReviews
