The Food Industry Lays an Egg

By Elton Camp

“The incredible, edible egg.”

But do let it be safe, we beg.

We all long ago have developed the knack

To open the container and look for a crack.

But now that caution is not enough.

Salmonella is getting mighty tough.

The bacterium the hen herself has managed to invade

So that eggs are contaminated before they are laid.

The hen may look healthy as can be,

But their eggs endanger you and me.

We are in the throes of an egg recall

It may come to a half-billion in all.

Very cautious we must be.

Says warning from the CDC.

A thousand people have fallen ill

And that number will increase still.

Among the several brands that authorities seek:

Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, West Creek.

If you find them behind your refrigerator door,

Take them right away to get a refund at the store.

But when in our own kitchen I went for a peek,

There was a carton that had been there for a week.

I opened quickly, only to see

All had been eaten but three.

My forehead feels kind of warm.

Oh, is that fever trying to form?

And my belly feels sort of tight.

Will I have cramping by night?
