SnowflakeA Poem by Nolan HittAn answer to the derogatory use of 'snowflake.'A snowflake -as you define it- is one who complains -demonstrates- about issues -you may also claim to not understand- in a way contrary to your own beliefs.
However, a snowflake has many more connotations - I'm sure you've read the meme, “Enough snowflakes become an avalanche,” or something similar- but have you actually thought about a single snowflake?
A snowflake is, by its nature, unique.
One basis of Western philosophical thought - political, social, or otherwise - for close to half a millennia is rooted in the idea of - and importance of- the individual.
A single human, and therefore all humanity, individually, are by their very -collective- nature, unique.
When you call me a snowflake, I hear, “Make America Great Again; stop being American,” Or -in a more specifically jejune way- “In this once [likely at least implied, if not directly stated] great land, which for all of its life has been a proponent of the individual, I implore you: please don't celebrate your uniqueness.”
Calling me a snowflake, while also claiming a love for, and desire to see the success of, America denies the very ideologies you wish an impossible return to.
If we are all snowflakes, then you are the unamerican ones. © 2017 Nolan Hitt |
