Prisoner's Land

Prisoner's Land

A Poem by Nolan Hitt
"

A new prison is to be built, but do we need the space?

"

The South East coast,

where millions of Africans were brought,

bound in chains and forced to labor,

a prison is being built.

Red bricks and mortar, set aside,

ready to become a true facade

as they cover

the Bleak, gray bricks, steel and tile

of space efficient cells.

Have you ever seen the kennel room

in a dog pound?

The construction workers are surrounded by fence,

meant to keep the public safe.

Prisoners in what will become a prison,

meant to keep the public safe.

These shores,

where many slaves made their last, lonesome landfall,

will be one of their descendents' final homes.

Regardless of whether it will be their last visit

these residents will fill every cell;

they are meant to,

it's a new home after all.

As a self-proclaimed,

Killer, Mike,

has so simply put,

“It's the new-way slavery.”
