The Frozen Lake In SummerA Poem by Marley E. CooperHas he lost who he is, or has he found it?I strode along the forest
floor To discover the nature
sealed within.
A soft breeze of freedom
engulfed me, As the birds began to sing.
The plants bowed beneath my
feet My shoes trampled the
flowers. The trees opened their faces
towards me, And every bramble desperately
cowered. The clouds retreated so the
sky could see me The mist of the sun, shone
for my sake. I marched along until I
stopped Upon a frozen lake.
And suddenly my mind beheld A sight that would entice " A frozen lake at summer time With a mist upon the ice. Yet this sight became even stranger;
A person was squirming under
the ice A prisoner under the solid
glass They were pounding for their
life.
But I could not see the hole
they fell through, The ice had not cracked a
bit. It was as if the lake had
frozen With this person already
under it. Despite this I clutched a
rock, And from above created
cracks and scars I did not notice that I'd
slid all the way out, To the centre where the person
was barred.
A glowing fog had gathered
around me. Formed clouds that waved
like water. Above I was beating and anxious
to free The person banging from
underneath. But this close I could see
their face, The dark hair and with skin
pale like bone. I was looking upon a
familiar sight A face resembling that of my
own.
I was above the ice desperate
to let out, My own self who was sealed beneath.
And with the waves of the
mist you could not even tell Whether I was the one
trapped or free. © 2017 Marley E. Cooper |
