You

You

A Poem by Elmira Ghanaatpisheh (Mina)

I Was thinking of you,

Imagining every inch of you

I held my hands near your arms,

But what I touched was just a shadow of you.
Days and nights drifted by,

My hands clasped in dreams of you.

I saw the beauty you couldn’t see,

And the goodness that lived within you.
Yet you disappointed me,
While
I clung to my faith in you.

It wasn’t a dream, I saw your eyes,

And the heartbeat I heard was surely you.
Then they urged me to wake,

For what I believed in wasn’t you.

You had shattered my heart too many times,

And healing was never the work of you.
I had to awaken,

To erase the portrait I’d painted of you.

And in that moment, wisdom came by
What I had loved was just a shadow of you.
