This world seems cold, full of evil and hate;
Causing us to tremble.....ponder our fate.
Many look around for someone to blame,
Listen to the news, searching for a name.
Here's a novel thought, you'll not like to hear.
Turn off that TV!.....Now look in the mirror.
"Who me? Well I never!" you start to say.
"How could I lead the whole world astray?"
These questions, for all of us, not just you.
Look closer at the things you fail to do.
Do you let love flow out to all you meet?
Are you rich, knowing some have bugs to eat?
Do you always use your God-given brain?
Think for yourself...even on the 'soul train'?
Do you speak out, when injustice you see?
Or hunch your shoulders, "It's not up to me!"
Do you stand and leave, or stay in the pew,
When you see it's fear and hatred they spew?
Do you simply accept what others say?
Blame all our ills on those who are gay?
Down through the ages with religious zeal,
Others, judged 'n condemned, with no appeal.
Who'll become the next victims of this age?
Ridiculed...scorned...downtrodden by rage.
Minorities, oft the scapegoats of choice,
Ignorance and fear grant evil a voice.
That voice, from a pulpit, stirs up a crowd,
Making them think such judging is allowed.
History attests to these shameful truths,
In witch-hunts 'n wars, we slaughter our youths.
When you point a finger.....try it.....it's true,
There's always three pointing right back at you.
Don't sit there quiet, get down on your knees,
Your silence implies....with them you agree.
Casting stones, as tossed boomerangs, my friend,
Will find their way back to you, in the end.
Oh Ellen this poem rings so true and is very scary that it is so. If only we could change the way people think and make those in Washington realize the error of their ways we would be better off. That of course isn't even possible-- But what if it was. Great poem my friend.
This piece bring the harsh reality of the world into our views maybe if we writers write more about this growing problem then maybe just maybe we can change the world. yet its so far out of reach but we still have to work to change. Great writing so much emotion and keeps our eys open
What a write.
Stunning.
So deep, not overly done & well thought out.
You speak a lot of truths, you feel the conviction & it definitely took hold of me.
Your story as well is inspiring.
Painful to hear of, a reminder of what to be grateful of, but inspiring nonetheless with the spirit you show & the fact that you still have so much faith in one you have never seen.
Masterfully written poem.
Read this twice and will probably come to read it again. What a fine piece of writing.. home-truths and more because it has a moral but doesn't preach, merely displays life and actions as they are.
We all have to share the blame, we can't go on blaming the 'situation being what it is in the world' - we can stop the rot, even if it's just a little each day or each month... every man is another man's brother or another mother's son and consequently worthy of respect and recognition.
Hatred or bigotry of any kind is forgetting what we're taught in the bible or if not by its laws but what is shown in most of the world's faiths in some way or another .. 'do unto others ' . We have to stand and be counted, speak out, unafraid.
Sorry, you got me onto my soapbox and I truly apologise for that - this is a very thought provoking post.
How true..So many people complain ..yet never take any of the responsibility for what is happening to this eart on their own shoulders..deep and very interesting write..Valentine
Deep....:)
I dont know what to say.....
But yes....each and ever word u said is true......
sadly d world has come to a stage where there's only 'ME' now.....
no 'OUR'....:(
The saddest part is each and every one of us know that and not a single person is ready to correct.
Such powerful thoughts speak of reality. That has been the same old story. It seems like we haven't learned until now. This poem serves as another reminder. May we take heed this time. This piece is pretty much moving and insightful.
I LOVE this piece. From the meaning to the meter and right down to the illustrations. It cuts so deep right to the underbelly of humanity. There are so many lines that I could call my favorite that I can't even begin to start quoting. Very well done.
As I looked at the picture of the two starving children scrounging for food, I was reminded of an ad I heard just yesterday about how some company here in America is proudly making Bio-Fuel from Soy Beans.
