ANGUISHED LOVE

ANGUISHED LOVE

A Poem by Ellen Hammond
"

Romantic love can give us great joy, but also great pain. The secret is to find a comfortable balance that helps us to flourish grow.

"

ANGUISHED  LOVE

I felt your anguish and your pain
Saw the torment in your eyes
I heard the words she uttered
Which broke you and made you cry

"Mom always thought so much of you"
May have triggered your first tear
But the sobs and trembling started
With her hug and "I love you, dear"

You drew her close without a word
Is that because I was so near?
"No one knows me like you do"
Your reply,"Call me tonight , my dear"

I felt the turmoil within you
As your head and heart were reeling
To give her love and comfort
Yet somehow spare my feelings

There had been years between you
And now you share her pain
Grief shared can be so bonding
Will you be torn between us again?

Be careful how you answer
Take time to truly search your heart
For the grief from trying to share you
Would be worse than being apart

Not that I could bear to lose you
You fill my heart so I'm complete
Yet can all the love I offer
With so much history compete?

I'm not giving ultimatums
Nor asking you to choose
It just hurts to watch you suffer
And think about all we could lose

Time can make the heart grow fonder
As it will dull hurtful memories
And often turns the better ones
To embellished fantasies

Beside which you may measure life
And unrealistically compare
All relationships that follow
Including the love we now share

A lovely expression of an obviously emotionally charged interlude...I'm only guessing, here, but is "I" the spirit of a deceased man, observing his widow being comforted by his former wife? Two women, who loved the same man, growing a friendship based on their commonalities AND their differences?
