A NEW CREATIONA Poem by Ellen Hammond
A NEW CREATION
For years my heart seemed so empty,
With only conflict, misery, and strife.
Oft' times I stopped to question,
"Is this all I'll get out of life?"
But with mercy, Jesus came for a visit
To my heart filled with bitterness and pride.
His presence said,"Here's what you're missing"
So I begged him then, "Please abide."
He needed to clean out the garbage
So His Spirit could flourish and grow.
My defenses made his work all the harder,
As I stumbled and tossed to and fro.
Yet He persevered in His labor,
Marching round my Jericho wall;
'Til His love permeated each fiber,
And my resistance began to crumble and fall.
I used to wonder why He even bothered
With a life that's been sinful from birth.
But He patiently polishes and cleanses,
For Jesus sees something of worth.
His light floods every crevice and memory
As He slowly reveals the truth.
My survival was never my doing.
He was there, overseeing my youth.
He shows me, my heart is a storehouse
Of valuable lessons I've learned.
Yes, life's taught me much and enriched me
With treasures that can never be burned.
As He tears down my walls and defenses,
He assures me it isn't a loss.
He's redeeming the time and healing.
Bringing good from my utter chaos.
So I'll lean on His strength and wisdom,
Rebuking the temptations to stray.
I know He has much yet to teach me
As I walk with Him day by day.
It's sheer pleasure to bask in His presence.
In Him, I can joyously live.
For you see, my joy's not just in receiving,
But in the love and compassion I give.
