SAFELY HOMEA Poem by Ellen HammondPredictions of hurricanes, Tornadoes,
strong winds, and gales, Always turn my thoughts to you, For forty years, without fail. As a full-time fisherman, Such forecasts caused much concern. For
boats, weirs, and lobster traps, Your
worry and fear would churn. The
mention of storms brewing, Way
down in tropical isles, Gave
you many sleepless nights. Anxious
frowns replaced your smiles.
Perhaps
it is the timing, This
one striking eastern shore, Makes
me pause to realize, You’re
not distressed anymore.
A
decade has drifted by, Since
our Father called you home. Your
footsteps imprint our hearts, Though
this earth you no more roam.
Six
years ago I joined you For
a brief moment in time. My work was not yet finished. Sent
back! I now pen this rhyme. ‘Twas
a wonderful visit. You
fair glowed with joy and peace. At
last we could share freely. No
fear love would ever cease.
Now
you know when you asked me, If
you hadn’t first touched drink, I
would have gone home to you, Sparing
all, much grief, I think.
True
love is eternal. We’d
have never stayed apart, If
we’d ignored foolish pride And
listened to our hearts.
Hind-sight
is twenty/ twenty. We
can’t change the past, you know But
we can learn life’s lessons And
from our poor choices grow.
To
see you so contented, Was
an awesome gift for me. You’re
always in safe harbor,
And
now sail a tranquil sea. © 2013 Ellen HammondFeatured Review
