The end of the worldA Story by Elizabeth BainbridgeThis was a homework task in English. I had a sudden wave of creativity and wrote this last night at 10:30!Headlines on every newspaper read: 'THE WORLD WILL END TODAY!'. Three months later, deranged men will wander the streets or every major city with a piece of cardboard that every suburbanite had previously ignored, reading: 'JUDGEMENT DAY IS COMING!' Eventually, three years later reports of floods echo across the globe with the introduction of treacherous tsunamis and earthquakes that begin to bludgeon countries to pieces. The death toll internationally breaks every record known to man and images cover the news broadcasts of orphaned children not asking for you to donate money to help them receive aid or fresh water anymore, but adding their petrified faces to the gallery of those who are just waiting to die. Over time these broadcasts stop as communications through the media halt and the survivors are left with an unfamiliar silence in their lives. They no longer have 'breaking news' being repeated over days and weeks about a new disease that is sure to wipe out civilisation, or updates on a war that by now everyone knows will never end. The need for news no longer exists because something unimaginably worse has arrived instead. When the end finally comes, there will be no nature, there will be no more houses, cars, skyscrapers, roads, people. The Earth will die. The only witnesses are the other planets. There will be no Big Bang like there was in the creation, in fact, the Earth, after its prolonged agony will stop. It will cease to exist. Just like that. Well, that what the humans expected anyway.
