To BE

To BE

A Poem by Elizabeth Porterfield

The cold descends

Upon my limbs

My leaves fell long ago

The wind rolls

Across gray skin

And through my shivering boughs

Yet still I stand

Tall and Silent

And only heaven knows

That as the snow

Falls from on high

I think back to the Spring

When I was dressed

In leaves; impressed

By birds as they took to their wings

I remember the squeaks

From the baby birds

In their nests of random things

As the mother’s settled

Next to their children

And calmly began to sing

Then came the Fall

Of the birds and the bees

As Winter drew ever-nearer

The birds ran for warmer venues

And I lost my gown of leaves

Only barren nests remained here

This is my life now

That of a tree in Winter

Constant, yet ever-changing my dear
