Chapter 6: Windows to the Soul

Chapter 6: Windows to the Soul

A Chapter by Elizabeth Porterfield

She stared up at my eyes

And I know not what she saw

But she sobbed then

Her tears those of a woman

Truly broken…

Long after the moment was over

I wondered…

The only reason I’ve ever cried like that

Is that I have found one of two things

My Salvation

Or my Damnation…

Did she see forgiveness in my eyes?

Or did she see her doom

The pain of all her cruel advances

Lurking beneath the surface…

Or did she see herself

Reflected in the murky depths…

Eyes are the windows to the soul…

Did she see something broken or whole?

It doesn’t really matter…

She has forgotten by now

If she ever truly remembered…

The same way she forgot who I was

Until she woke up that morning,

Her head pounding, her eyes

Sensitive to the light,

Once again angry with the world…

And yet

I still can’t help but wonder,

What did she see?
