Fall

Fall

A Story by Elizabeth Porterfield

A sea of shattered glass lay at her feet. The air smelled of the acrid smoke pouring out of her mouth as her concious mind told her to dive into the fragments.

She had given him up; the best thing that had ever happened to her.  It was the stupidest thing she'd ever done, and the most painful.  Now her heart was screaming at her.  Her soul felt torn between the will to live, and the desire to just let go.

"Stupid, stupid girl," she chided herself.  "How could you think it could last with anyone but him."

She had given him up for another, in need of a closeness that he couldn't give her at the time.  Now she feared he would be gone forever.  She couldnt bear the thought.

So she stood on the precipice of her life, staring into the shards.  The light seemed to draw her closer, promising an escape as it glinted off the glass.  It offered her a twisted sort of hope.  She drew closer to the edge, and closer, and closer.  Then she just let herself...

Fall.

This is beautifully written! Honestly, I'm pretty new here and this is the first story that actually caught my attention. The idea is borderline cliche, but the writing helps it out.
