Small Reminders (Beneath the Pillow)A Poem by Elise O'HaireThis is a partly true story of a little girl I know.
A little girl once told me,
About her brother’s lost tooth.
She spoke with fascination,
Describing the event in detail.
“You can talk with a loose tooth,
You know,” she said.
I smiled and nodded,
Holding in my laughter.
She then began to talk
About the tooth fairy.
With excitement she spoke
Of the coin under her brother’s pillow.
She had yet to lose a tooth,
But she knew that when she did,
The tooth fairy would show up,
Presenting her with a gift.
These small reminders,
Help me to recollect the past.
If we could only remember
The excitement as a child.
We used to place our tooth Underneath the pillow.
Anticipation and excitement
Built up inside of us.
In the morning we would find,
A round, silver coin.
And with joy we would show our parents,
Who put it there in the first place.
But we didn’t know that,
And we didn’t care to know.
Maybe, as a child, we did know.
But the fun still continued.
Even until we turned thirteen,
And our last tooth was pulled.
For old times sake
We put it under the pillow.
If we could just remember,
These simple, small reminders.
If we could just remember,
When we placed our tooth beneath our pillow.
