If only...A Poem by Elise O'Haire
The sun shone brightly
Over glaucous stems.
The woman sat,
Staring out her bedroom window.
If only she could be there,
The moment he said “I do”.
The chapel would not welcome her,
And her heart would shatter again.
Yet she wanted to witness the sight,
Of her long lost love.
If only he could remember her,
The girl next door.
No, he never realized she had loved him,
Or that her feelings had not changed.
If only she could turn back time
To the days of childhood.
They used to run
Through the dandelion fields,
Picking raspberries for a pie.
A tear slid down the woman’s cheek,
She sighed most heavily.
If only she could turn back time.
She knew she was not old,
But a maid she was indeed.
Never would she marry,
Not after those church bells rang.
She waited for the tolling
And waited for the cheer.
When none came she stood to her feet,
Hope rising within her.
Hurrying to the door,
She opened it with a bang.
Her heart now pumped softly
As she wiped away a tear.
If only he would remember her,
And all their bygone days.
Turning away she sighed,
It was not meant to be.
A tap on her shoulder
Startled her,
And she turned to face the man.
He wore a crisp black suit,
And stared at her with pleading eyes.
He spoke softly Tears running down his cheeks.
If only she would forgive him,
If only they could start again.
The woman nodded slowly
And the man smiled.
He turned away
And she shut the door,
Now destined for a life of love.
