Papa Smurf

Papa Smurf

A Poem by Elijah Gleaves
"

An all time great cartoon character used a literary tool to understand what it is to be an artist

"

Someone once asked me,

"Why do you write?"

And I answered,

" Why do you breathe?"

My question was answered by an expression

Void of ideas and glazed over by confusion.

So I answered,

" If you hold your breath long enough your face will

Turn blue your cheeks will enlarge and you will die."

The man looked at me, his mind bulging with questions.

" So if you don't write you turn into papa smurf?"

I sigh, force a smile and meet his inquistive gaze.

" That is correct sir, I am papa smurf..."

I then turned the corner and walked off into a daydream.
