Ads and Truths

Ads and Truths

A Poem by Elie Marie
"

the lies of the world. the truths of the world.

"

You watch the ads on tv

in magazines and newspapers.

You believe the billboards

and the models you see.

You should be this thin,

a certain type of pretty,

and your hair, just so.

But why?

Why believe what's false?

Why believe what makes us feel less then?

But the ads on tv,

in the magazines, newspapers,

and on billboards

the ones showing us

the children dying of starvation

the still very much alive sex trafficking

the abuse

the neglect

the wars

all the horrors of the world

why ignore those

why look past those

They are the ones we should believe

They make us better and stronger

aware enough to change a life

or a hundred

and maybe

to save the world.

are you thin enough?

Have you fed a starving child today?

This is different for me... and a bit of an older one.
But it's a subject I'm very passionate about.

i like the contrast at the end....
we can't save the world but we can ignore those who say we have to be and look a certain way...we need more acceptance in this world, there is not enough of it.
this reminds me of the Beats...maybe sexton, levertov, rich...
nicely done...

I friended you on the strength of this Ellie Marie - thank you for the friend request btw. I look forward to reading the rest of your work here. :))

I felt bad after reading it - I know it wasnt the itention but we bring what we bring to the reading of a piece so perhaps the guilt of eating my dinner while some of the ads you mentioned were being shown has been hanging over me and you helped me see it, you galvanised me.Thats the sign of a good writer, I feel.
I will be dong something about that forthwith . :))

I find this poem insightful. You've written precisely what we need these days the most-compassion for other souls and being less caught up in own tiny worlds.
