Chapter Fourteen

I drop it back onto the pile, rolling my eyes.

“It’s kind of funny, don’t you think?” I ask. “How easily it is to break someone. How many different ways there are to break someone. I couldn’t believe it. My favorite way though, a power that I just discovered I had while I was in Tartarus. Death Fire. See, it burns white, instead of red. And it can take a person’s soul away from them.”

He doesn’t move.

“But I don’t need to use it to take your soul. The world will take it for me. You don’t even know who you really are dating do you? The person she is.”

I tilt my head to the side as a thought comes to me.

“Maybe she doesn’t either. Is is possible? Yes. It really is… And it would explain why she never felt my presence in Tartarus.. It would explain you. Why she fell in love. Because she doesn’t remember! Oh it all makes so much sense now,” I rant.

“You don’t know the monster that you’re in love with because she doesn’t know the monster that she is!”

I shake my head at the realization.

“It won’t save you from your fate,” I whisper.

𝌀

“Oooo Mutt! Wake up!” I say in a sing song voice, hours later.

He doesn’t move.

“Hey, Mr. Awesome!” I sayk kicking the end of the bed slightly.

No response.

“Mutt?” I say, concerned.

I walk around the bed, shaking his shoulder. “Hey, Mutt!”

Mutt’s eyes slowly open.

“Good gods Mutt! You scared me! Don’t do that! I mean honestly! It’s not even funny!” I say, glaring at him.

“You lied,” he whispers.

Shocked I reel back, eyes wide.

“What?” I ask, playing the part.

“You’re a liar,” he groans, his eyes closing.

Then there was the blood, leaking out from underneath him.

“NO!” I shout. “NO! IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ME! I WAS SUPPOSED TO KILL YOU!”

“Cal? Cal? Hey! Cal?!’ a voice says.

My eyes fly open to stare at Mutt, he was looking at me funny.

“What?” I ask.

“Did you fall asleep?” he demands. “I’ve never seen you sleep! Don’t do that. It’s weird.”

He fakes a shudder at the end.

“You’re alive!” I exclaim.

He raises an eyebrow, “A fact that I’m well aware of, I assure you.”

My body slumps with relief. My plan could still work. Everything could still turn out as it was supposed to.

“Are you okay?” Mutt asks. “You look a little out of it.”

“Why are you up?” I ask, ignoring the question.

By the look on his face he noticed it too. But he didn’t say anything about it.

“Got tired of laying down?” Mutt offers.

“What the hell?!” I demand.

“Um,” Mutt says. “Cal, you’re really starting to freak me out.”

“Not yet I’m not,” I say. “Your trial starts in ten minutes.”

With that I turn around, slamming the door behind me.
