SHAKESPEARE IN MY POND
If Shakespeare were alive, he would turn around in his grave. How could I name a fish after him, especially one who couldn't write half a line of poetry! But the idea was not so much that of a poet, as of a big fish in a little pond. Certainly Shakespeare was a giant in his world.
For most of us, it feels good to be that big fish in a little pond. That can degenerate into the realm of pride – dangerous ground. We may boast of our generous lifestyle, our well-paying and/or fulfilling job, possessions, mental acuity, and a host of other things.
Instead of succumbing to pride and materialism, let's use our worldly goods and capabilities for the glory of God. Above all, we must acknowledge that absolutely everything comes from God. We came into the world naked and will not take anything with us (see Job 1:21).
As I watch Shakespeare working furiously toward the food I sprinkle on the surface, I can almost hear him think: To feed or not to feed, that is the question! Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie! Our mentality should be a little higher than that of a fish. We should know that without God's enablement and resources we could do nothing! Or someone like Shakespeare might well come to this conclusion: Lord, what fools these mortals be!
