What a mess we made

What a mess we made

A Poem by Eliszaan

What a mess, what a waste, what a fire, what a flood,
What a bitter little tragedy we built out of blood.
You spit, I snarl, you shove, I break,
But we both come back like it's fate, like it’s hate.

Oh, tell me do you taste the smoke in your lungs?
The ashes of love that burned off of our tongues?
Did you ever think we’d be anything but this?
Feral and foolish, too broken to miss?

You turn, I bite, you scream, I laugh,
You take your pound of flesh, I take half.
We trade in venom, we bargain in war,
You slam the door, I break the floor.

And yet, and yet
My hands still shake when I say your name,
Your voice still burns like a goddamn flame.
Tell me, does the darkness whisper my sound?
Do your knees still buckle when I’m not around?

What a mess, what a wreck, what a damn shame,
We swore we’d never be the ones to play this game.
But here we are, in the ruin, in the dust,
With nothing left but fire and rust.

Go on, run, prove you don’t need me,
Prove you're free, prove you're clean,
But you know, you know you’ll never be.

Because I don’t need you, and you don’t need me,
And yet, and yet, look at us still,
Dancing on graves we swore we would fill.
Cursed to collide, to break and to burn,
But always, always, we twist and return.

You push, I pull, I kneel, you stay,
We breathe through the wreckage, refuse to decay.
What a mess, what a war, what a love, what a need,
And still, and still we choose to bleed.

So come here, love, let the world turn to ash,
Let the past be a ghost, let the future crash.
Because if this is ruin, if this is sin,
Then I’d rather burn with you than ever begin again.
