The day was as hot as it was long. And a very long day it was indeed, for young Cassiel. Barely 18, she gave off a noticeable air of youth. After the death of her parents 3 years ago, and then living with an abusive adoptive ‘father’ for two years, she was just happy to be away from it all. But back to today. She was walking along, minding her own business, carrying some groceries to her current house, which belonged to her parents, but had since been abandoned. It was very hot outside, which, combined with the weight of the things she had bought, slowed her down considerably. Even though the sun had already set, the humid heat clung to her skin. Her waist-long, honey-blonde hair was clinging to her exposed neck, increasing her discomfort. Sea-green eyes scanned the road, looking for a street sign that would hopefully show that her destination was close.

A faint feeling of relief settled on her as she recognized the street name. I’m almost home… Suddenly, a hand shot out from a small alley, and roughly grabbed her arm. Before she could make a sound, the arm made a single, jerking movement and dragged her into the alley. Despite this, she clung desperately to her groceries; she couldn’t afford to not eat for another week. Her captor was a tall man, and from the position he had her in, she could not see his face. The man spoke, with just the slightest hint of a British flair.

“Don’t worry, miss, I do not intend to kill you. May I ask where you live?” Not calmed in the least by his words, she decided it would be best to answer, lest he become angry.

“1…2843. Elm street.”

With another sudden movement, he flipped her around to face him, but before she could see his face, he leaned down to her neck. Her fear kept her locked in her position, holding tightly onto her groceries and every muscle tensed.

Slowly, and with great precision, he bit into her neck. She let out a soft gasp of air, yet, it wasn’t out of pain, he was careful not to cause her any. An odd, almost pleased feeling came over her body. Her eyes closed in some amount of pleasure, her mind unaware that she was slipping into unconsciousness…

 -

The vampire carefully picked her unconscious form into his arms. "You can have a chance to live now...you won't be hurt so easily..." He shifted her weight as gently as possible, grabbed her bag with one hand, and began to walk.

Besides, such beauty shouldn't be taken by old age...

___

The next day, Cassiel awoke to the warmth of sunshine spilling in through a window. Slowly, and somewhat painfully, she opened her eyes to the room around her.

It was, in fact, the living room in her parent’s house. Slightly surprised to find herself there, her hand immediately went to her neck. There she could feel the distinctive bite marks from the previous night. So that really did happen…

After deciding that it had indeed happened, she took a moment to relax and ‘feel’ how her body was faring. The first thing she noticed was that the sunlight didn’t quite feel as hot as it usually did. Moving her hand over the fabric of the couch, she came upon the realization that she was less sensitive to heat, but not texture. A sudden rush of panic arched through her, and she moved her hand to her chest to check her heartbeat.

Nothing.

The information slowly sunk in, and she forced herself to stand, and then ran to the bathroom. Going over to the mirror, she leaned in front of it and slowly opened her mouth, half afraid of confirming the truth.

They were still fairly small, but her upper canines were noticeably larger. Finally, all the signs confirmed, she slowly accepted her situation.

I’m a vampire.

Feeling a bit numb, she slowly wandered to her kitchen and peeked into her refrigerator. Much to her surprise, the food she bought was neatly organized inside. Did he…?

                ___

But, this was all in the past. Now, a few weeks later, let’s see how the young vampire is adjusting…

                ___

Another hot day, though to her ‘dead’ body, it hardly registered. She hadn’t fed on blood since she had been changed, and it was starting to get to her. It was an odd feeling, not like hunger you would get from not eating for awhile. It was as if something…dark was slowly crawling inside her, slowly starting to take over. It was starting to affect her ability to concentrate at her job.

Her job was simple: Help the butcher with whatever he needed help with. Usually there wasn’t much she could do, so they just chatted. A few times in their talks, she came oh so close to telling him, but always just barely held back. Being the type of person she was, no one suspected her of being anything other than a perfectly normal young girl, and she wasn’t about to ruin her chances of a somewhat normal life.

He was cutting the meat, as he usually did, being a butcher. She was standing nearby, patiently waiting for the work day to end. Suddenly, the cutting sounds made a different noise than usual. The noise was followed by an annoyed, pained sigh from him. Looking over, she panicked at the sight.

He had messed up his cutting, and ended up with his finger halfway off, and it was almost dangling from the rest of his finger. As he went to get something to wrap his finger with, an odd sensation came over her. The darkness that she had felt before, always waiting, took over.

All she could remember was blackness.

___

By the time she snapped out of it, the damage had already been done.

In her disoriented state, all she could see and smell was blood. There was blood everywhere. Her entire body felt numb, and her mind felt disassociated from everything. Standing up slowly, she didn’t dare look for the butcher. She didn’t have to look. Even if she didn’t want to admit it, she knew in the back of her head that she had just killed a man.

Despite that horrible feeling that she kept suppressed, there was an odd sense of satisfaction. Probably because I was hungry and finally got to eat… She reasoned.

As she got further away from her workplace and heading out of town, the numbness faded, and she became aware of her pain. The nearness of the butchery to the edge of the town gave her a bit of relief, so she didn't have to walk so far. Looking down at herself, she found herself heavily spattered with blood, and her hands were absolutely drenched in it. For once, she was glad it was so dark she could barely see anything. Most everyone had retreated into their houses for the night, and the few that were around hadn't noticed her yet. A part of her wished to be found, to stand trial for the horrible crime she commited. Silently hating herself, she finally reached the boundary of the town.

Looking back at it, she remembered all the things that had happened there. Her parents’ death, the two-year abuse, and now this…

Everything horrible that’s happened to me happened here…

Slowly turning and walking away into the darkness, she left behind the town, and everything she associated with it…

Goodbye…it’s time to start over…

Aw, poor Cassiel, she has so many things happen to her that she doesn't deserve. I really liked this story because your so descriptive in this one, which I wish you would be a little bit more in your other stories. But despite that I love your writing and this is one of my favorites from you. Keep writing please and give me more stories.

Well, she's a different kind of vampire, that's for sure! I'm surprised she didn't have anyone see her-drenched in blood, probably dripping it on the ground, possibly creating wonderful footprints as she walked through the town. I'd like to know what happened to the other vampire, too. The act of vampirism is intimate enough that even ignoring the usual vampire concepts you'd think he'd have a reason for doing it.

Bah! Just my musings. The fact that I'm wondering what happened to the townsfolk and to the vampire shows that I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
