Chapter IIA Chapter by Chelsea MarieChapter II
She pushed open the double doors of her estate, wanting to be as quiet as possible. She set her violin case down on the ground and rung out her hair. Her parents were in the living room, reading by candlelight. There went her cover. They must’ve been waiting up for her to return. Her mother looked up at her, gasping so loud it broke Emily’s heart. Her parents lifted themselves off of the couch and ran to their daughter. “In the name of all that is holy, what the hell happened to you?” her mother said, looking her over then taking her into her arms. It was the first time she had ever heard her mother swear. Blood was still trickling down her arm from the wolf’s bite, and Emily noticed for the first time how much it truly pained her. It was causing a searing, burning sensation all along her arm, which frightened her. She hadn’t expected that. “Emily”, he mother slightly shook her, “What happened to you?” Her father was speechless. He was literally at a loss for words. “It came out of nowhere. I didn’t even see it coming through the fog,” she began. She decided to leave out the part about Christopher and his lackeys. That would be her secret. “What, Emily? What did?” he father finally spoke. She looked up at her father. “A dog. Someone’s dog must’ve escaped, or it was a wild dog. I am not sure. But it came out of nowhere and attacked me. I was finally able to get away, but not without some damage....” she look down at the wound. Her mother gasped again. “Wait here, I’m going to go get some bandages,” her mother took off down the hallway. Her father looked down at her, and gently grabbed her hand. “Come. I’ll take you upstairs,” he father lead the way, ascending the stairs and following the hall down to her bedroom. It was dark, lit only by the oncoming moonlight. The storm was clearing, displaying the moon and all of her glory. She was full tonight. Emily wondered if it had anything to do with the strange events that had taken place. She brushed the thought away though, walking over to her bed and falling down on it. Her father sat down next to her, stroking her hair. “Honey, are you sure nothing else happened? I mean, it is rare to find wild dogs running loose in this town. Are you sure?” he asked, gently. She looked up at him quizzically. “Yes, father. I know what I saw, and felt. Nothing else happened. I promise,” she said. He let out a long sigh, then leaned down and kissed her forehead. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to protect you, like I should have been...” “Dad...” “Please, let me finish. You are still my little girl, no matter how old you are. You and Caleb are my life. As is your mother. My paintings, my career, that is disposable. But you three are everything I love, no matter what happens. I knew I should’ve gone with you...” Emily placed a small hand on her father’s. “Father...There is no way you could’ve known what would happen. And I’m still alive. That dog could’ve killed me, but I fought it off. You will always be there to protect me, even if you aren’t there physically. Your words will forever ring in my ears, telling things I should do, or not do. Roads I should take or steer clear from. You have not failed me,” she gazed up at him, her eyes pleading with him to just leave their conversation where is was. He nodded, and looked over at the doorway where her mother was rushing in with bandages. She sat down next to her daughter and gently picked up her arm to patch the wound. She dabbed it with a few cotton swabs, stopping momentarily when Emily winced at the small amounts of pain. “It’s alright, honey. It’s almost over,” her mother reassured her. She finished wrapping the bandage around her daughter’s arm, then sat there staring at her. There were almost tears in her mother’s eyes. Elisia knew that Anthony had already spoken with Emily about what had happened, and she didn’t want Emily to relive it again. She kissed Emily’s forehead, then cupped the side of her face with her hand. “I love you, sweetheart. Please, get your rest,” she smiled, attempting to hide her worry. Elisia got off of the bed, then took her leave, followed by her husband. Emily lay in the dark, the moon casting its angelic rays throughout the room. Her arm was suddenly throbbing, more than it had when the attack had first occurred. The pain was a combination of burning and pulsating, which frightened Emily. There was definitely something strange about that creature... © 2013 Chelsea MarieAuthor's Note
