Perhaps the idea of darkness is what instills the fear, rather then the affects of darkness itself... or not.

"

Grasping, falling drowning.
My heart can’t help but heave.
The darkness rains, it’s fluttering.
Blanketing all so I fail to see.

Where wanders light? I’m calling.
In this darkness there is only me.
Now reaching out, I’m wailing.
This damned darkness caused my mind to flee.

Oh, lo-
