MirrorsA Poem by ElanI wish you could see yourself, you’re magnificent. I plan to give you the world you know. Sure you love me now but what is love if not a transient cosmos of hatred and warmth? Sure you accept my quirks now, but won’t some part of you, some day, grow annoyed by my aloofness? Will you love me when I get fat and old, and ugly and bold? When I don’t want to work, but instead crave the creamy soup you make when the night gets cold? You warm my bed with your smile and your soul. Will you still look at me with the same loving eye when I have to go back to school or work? Sure I’m incredibly generous to you now, but what about when that one “bad day” comes? The day when I become abrasive and temperamental. Will you still make me your silky tea to cheer me up? It is , naturally difficult for me to describe you , For your ineffable beauty can even be found in the fiery rage of your glare. Like a volcano perhaps. But will you cool your embers to entertain me when I feel blue? Will you throw the blanket over me when I drink too much and hold me from the ledge? Will you continue to fight for me when I am no longer able to stand? Will you weep for me when you lose me to the sky? I know that I will go first. But the greater tragedy would be the one where I don’t get to spend every single moment with you in the little time that we have. All I ask is that you go through this prison with me , and love me as if we might never escape. You take the pain away, as I always tell you, but now you must let me hold you and be your hero for a change. © 2020 Elan |
