Rigoletto

Rigoletto

A Poem by Elaenor Aisling
"

Inspired by the movie Rigoletto, a very old one, but a favorite of mine from childhood.

"

A Beautiful soul

hidden within a casing

of harsh rebuke

kept secret

in the catacombs

of a dusty heart.

Nothing to break it free

from its stone cage.

No one hear it

cry in the dark

of the tombs

of long lost memories.

It is in want of air

the tombs are filled

with the stench

of a rotten spirit

which keeps the soul

bound, as its jailor

within the body

of a misshapen

brute.

Its memories

are becoming tarnished

its eyes, clouded

they no longer see hope

hope has died to them

no thought

of freedom

enters the mind

it seems to late for that now.

But nay, it is never

to late for hope

hope will always rise

as a bird

singing its song

even within the tombs

of long lost memories.

Even without the title's reference to Rigoletto, this poems stands on its merits as a tribute to the thrush-like note that hope may yet strike, even the dank gloom of a soul long entombed.

Thanks!
This was a very thoughtful piece. We all wonder at one point or another if our own spirit is heading towards hardness such as this. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done.

There is so much lush and dark imagery in this, setting the stage for the deeper theme of redemption. I've never seen the movie, but I definitely want to, now.

This is an elegant, charming poem, filled with Gothic yet ebullient images which at first paint despair as concisely as a poem can before ending on what is an inspirational verse about hope. Lovely.

Very powerful words. It almost felt as if it ended too shortly, but that is how it works sometimes. I still iked the uplifting ending after the dark intro, and the descriptions you used were fantastic. Ill need to read more of your work
