Through the eyes of a Heretic (part 1)A Story by El Cu CuyI know that a lot of people say that heresy is really bad and all, but when people start to push you into it, that's when it starts getting serious. THIS is serious. Please listen. This is a little story from the view point of a 'heretic'. Most people don't think of someone who is opposed to most beliefs as a normal human being. Most religious people view them as heretics, or people who go against humanity. Well, that's a little biased and extreme. In this account, one such as I was branded a heretic by some peoples that will not be named.
I was minding my own business an early November morning when I was, more or less, accosted by a religious member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latterday Saints. They wondered if I by chance had a pocket bible on hand. I politely declined saying that I was not religious. They proceeded to berate, ridicule, and blaspheme me for not being Christian. They atrociously declared me a heretic of Christ and a satanist who would burn in hell for eternity. I politely told them that a good portion of my family was religious and that I had religious friends. They THEN proceeded to berate my friends for not trying to convert me and then said that it was a shame that my family not disown me. At the time I was feeling pretty optimistic. Seeing the crisp autumn sun and sky above me I couldn't help but feel a little perplexed at this person. They had come up to me politely and asked for an item, I declined politely saying that I wasn't exposed to religious beliefs.
I then had a meltdown in front of the person for the sake of finishing the discussion before any more verbal abuse was strewn in the air. I obscenely stated that I would never or ever for that matter obligate myself to a religion such that its members must feel that they degrade other members of society for not conforming to their ways of teaching. I then proceeded to scream at the person that they didn't know me or had no INKLING of a thought as to if I WAS indeed a heretic. I for one had no prejudices or vices against religion. I though that it was all fine and dandy, just not for me; I was myself agnostic. That I believed in a higher power, IF there even was a higher power, seemed ludicrous to this person. After my little tyrade of moral judgement I proceeded to walk away after a final GOOD DAY was said. I am not a unmannered person. I believe in self preservation through becoming more aquainted with the ethics of mannerism. You should be polite to someone even though they themselves have wronged you. It's the most BASIC RULE that ANYONE teaches. Treat others as you would wish to be treated. I wished to be treated with due respect and acknowledgment, but this person deaned themselves above me and accosted me with beratements of blasphemy and heresy towards the court of God. I had no intentions of listening to this person any longer so I headed towards my destination at hand.
This is just a portion of the beratement that I have recieved from society for not conforming towards the most popular religion. Due to my hometowns size, I have had frequent 'talks' about religion and if I would ever believe in something. It's a little depressing when you honestly think that other's would respect your views on reality and let you be the judge of your own existence.
I leave off with a quote from a very admired writer Dr. Theodore Seuss Giesell - "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer youself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who will decide where to go." © 2008 El Cu CuyAuthor's Note
