Maturity

Maturity

A Poem by Marcus Medrano

we were so quick

sharing an eternity

in only a few minutes

I was afraid of this

but it looks like its come

unfortunately our songs done

its so odd

after this trial

I’m still standing here with a smile

why worry about the trivial things?

and wonder what it was you thought

was wrong with me

despite your thoughtless words

and attitude

I’ll miss ending my day with you

but I guess this time I chose the selfish thing

and I decided to choose me

I’m not above saying I need someone to love me

being that prideful is just too ugly

But what I’m not going to do

is sit here and beg

and plead

hoping one day you'd see it

that you'd see me

even though I tried not to

I still had high hopes for you

granted that now I have to let that just slip through

I hope that you’ll be happy

and that you’ll be blessed

I’ll pray for you

because I know that you’re busy, and of course stressed

I’m sad

not angry

I’ll miss you

but I’m not needy

forgetting any kind of scrutiny

I’m glad you helped me grow in my own maturity

God bless you

You have no idea what it is you have really done for me

I feel like I've been here before. It's so relatable! Not to mention heartbreaking! But, I'm glad that the end of this piece wasn't bitter, but hopeful. Hopeful that even though what was there never became what it could have, that the person you cherished will have what the two of you couldn't have or hold on to. I would say you're bold for writing this. But, much like Anna Nalick sang "If I get it all down on paper it's no longer inside of me threaten' the life it belongs to," this absolutely needed to be written. Great work!
