Break Even

Break Even

A Story by Elli

The young boy sat there, seemingly dead. Not one part of his body was visibly moving, not even his eyes as he stared straight ahead at the opposite wall. Nothing about the wall was remotely interesting - a poster of his favorite band, and one picture of him and his brother when they were little and immature enough to play in the mud.
This boy was not staring at the poster, or even the picture. No, he was simply staring. Though his body remained quite still, his mind was working wonders. One song, repeated a million times, rung in his head, and it took all of his self-control to remain completely still.
Her perfectly straight blond hair...her chocolate brown eyes...the slender curves of her waist...it was driving him insane. Even the single freckle on her cheek, which had he had paid no attention to while they were dating, haunted his dreams. It was as though, if he had paid more attention to that single freckle, she would not have cheated on him.
But, that was absurd. People did not cheat on their boyfriends because the boyfriend never mentioned her freckle! Hell, that freckle had been the bane of her existence for the years he had known her! Alas, the two of them knowing each other for so long had not stopped her from cheating on him, and crushing his heart like a bug.
"Kara, why, why, why did you do it?" He asked, moving for the first time in minutes. One single tear leaked out of his saphire blue eyes, and he wiped it hastily on his sleeve. Tears were p***y's, he scolded himself, using his fathers' favorite choice of words.
"Oh, I know why. It's because Jeremy's smarter, cuter, and a better f**k than I am!" He suddenly snarled, standing up and kicking at a box that been unfortunate enough to be near his foot. Hot anger boiled up to the surface, and he fouhnd himself wanting nothing more than to just destroy his room.
One single lyric came across his head from the song he had been listening to just hours ago,
'Oh, you got his heart and my heart and none of the pain. You took your suitcase, I took the blame.'
It was enough to make him freeze, and drop to the floor in a pathetic heap. Tears flew freely from his eyes now, there was no holding it in.
Yes, seventeen year old Riley Stuart had just had his heart broke, and the girl had just called to tell him she was leaving him. And that song fitted his entire mood so perfectly, it was as if the song was destined for this moment.
