Alex sat there, head-phones plugged deeply into her ears as her head bobbed gently to the music. Fingers tapping on the desktop softly, she imagined herself on stage, singing this very song to an audience of millions - both publicly and media. The pressure of it would, she knew, be enough to make her want to climb back down and curl into a ball until the concert is over. But, that's not what she would do, as she knew perfectly well.
No, she'd face the crowds, just like her favorite band. OK, favorite wasn't a big enough word for how she felt about this band. They were her very life - she woke up to their music on her clock-radio, walked to the bus stop with their music in her ears, and came home and did this. Could you call her obsessed? Of course you could. Would she care? Not Alex McGee.
The song ended, and she reluctantly pulled the ear phones out, switching her mp3 player to 'off' so to save batteries. Silence nearly suffocated her before Alex had enough sense to push her chair back and walk down the carpetted stairs into the living slowly, grinning as she saw her baby sister crawling happily on the floor by the last step.
"Riley, shouldn't you be in the playpen?" She asked, scooping the young girl in her arms. Riley grinned at her, pearly white teeth gleaming at her. Riley was only 1 year old, and Alex 16.
"Oh, there she is! Goodness me, thank you Alex, dear!" Their mother suddenly cried, appearing from seemingly no where. Alex grinned again, passing over Riley into their mothers' arms. "What would I do without you, hon?"
Alex smiled on the outside, but on the inside, she was grimacing. She knew that her mother would have been so much better off if Alex hadn't been born when their mother was seventeen. Walking into the living room, she looked around, trying to find peace in her world. The rabbit's cage holding two female rabbits stood against the window; the bird cage against the second window. The sky was rather cloudy, and dark, as if rain was coming.
Just as Alex was about to say how much those clouds and rain was like her life, one beam of light came feebly into her living room, growing strength as every second. Alex watched the light, and felt herfelf sudden lighten.
This, she decided, was her peace. Her baby sister crawling around her playpin, attempting another escape; the bunnies sleeping peacefully in their cage; even the bird seemed still. Did she need his love for peace? No. Of course she didn't.
Alex grinned, this time truly, and leaned back against the couch, imagining her favorite song in her head happily.
