The tile store

The tile store

A Chapter by EileenMarie

It was a cold raining Saturday Morning.  The wind was blowing and the skies were black.  Patricia dropped her son off at the 9 am indoor baseball practice only to have to rush back to meet her contractor, Jack, at the local home improvement store.  What had she got herself into?  Recently separated from her verbally abusive husband, she had to move in with her mother while she and her ex fought over who would get the marital home according to her lawyers paperwork.  Her mothers’ house well worn and tired desperately needed a facelift in the impractical kitchen.   She convinced her mother to update the kitchen and upstairs out of date bathroom, but she was responsible to meet the contractor to pick out the tiles for both rooms.  Patricia had no desire to stand there and sort through various types and shades of tile.  Her daughter constantly saying “what about this one?” or “hey mom check this one out!”   As she unexcitedly stood there looking she glanced down the aisle and noticed her friend Margaret walking with a young hot guy chatting along.  Margaret says hi and said “I hoped I’d catch you.” Patricia was thrilled to see her as Margaret has the patience of a saint and loves home decorating.  Patricia started showing Margaret the various tiles and sizes asking what she thought.  As she was doing this she noticed the hot guy standing with them looking at the tiles.  Who was this guy?  Did he work here?  Why is he talking to us?  Patricia couldn’t think about tiles as long as this guy was standing here.  Margaret must have figured that Patricia was a bit confused because she said, “Patricia have you met Colin, Jack’s son?”  Patricia replied “No” remembering that Margaret had mentioned in the past that Jack had a son and how good looking he was and boy she wasn’t kidding.   Patricia’s daughter quickly spoke up pointing out the sky dive on Colin’s sweatshirt asking if he skydives.  “Yes, I just did” he told Brenna as she looked up at him curiously.  As Brenna interrogated Colin, Patricia, Margaret and Jack narrowed the tiles down and choose the same one for the floor and the walls.  Although Patricia loved things to look nice she preferred simple to every style which made it easier narrowing down to a neutral tone.  The two of them got to work telling Jack what tiles, border tiles and grout, turning to the pick out the bathroom fixtures and vanity.  Patricia was so overwhelmed and not in the mood that she agreed with everything Margaret suggested.  Periodically Colin would chime in flirting and Patricia was a bit taken a back.  Standing in an oversized windbreaker with wet hair, she started to feel a bit intimidated by this young hot stud standing across from her.  Wondering why the heck he was flirting with her, Patricia realized she hadn’t even put on make-up or brushed her hair.  Colin ever so confident and charming winking at Patricia whenever she spoke making Patricia look at herself wondering what the hell was she wearing and even at one point turning around to see if perhaps there was a hot young chic behind her.   Hastily Patricia turned to Jack and asked if they could be finished as she needed to pick up her son who was 20 minutes away.  Jack agreed saying they got everything they needed and he would see her on Tuesday to go over the final drawings.  Patricia turned to Margaret, thanked her for helping and said she’d call her later.  Colin quickly said “Nice meeting you Patricia see you soon” and Patricia smiled and said “nice meeting you as well.

Patricia hurried up the aisle as she did she heard her phone buzzing her bag.  She reached in answering in shallow breath.  “Hello” it was Margaret.  “Hi” Margaret says back.  “Guess who thinks you’re hot” says Margaret, and Patricia gasps “are you kidding?  Did you see how I was dressed?  Wait a minute isn’t he like 25 years old” Margaret chuckles, no he is 33!”  “Oh! That’s better I am only 11 years older” Patricia laughs.  Margaret says “I am serious he is interested in you, he said if you ever want to hook up he is available”  “Oh that sounds better!” chuckles Patricia, “I don’t think so.”  “Well, maybe you should at least go out for an ice cream or something with him?” he is so gorgeous.  “Okay, I’ll think about it” Patricia sarcastically retorts.  Patricia’s self esteem had had its share of blows lately and this was a nice boost.  Even if she didn’t pursue she suddenly felt a smile widening on her face.  The cloudy rainy day suddenly didn’t matter. Today was a starting out to be a great day!

I dont know all the rules to writing. One thought I had was instead of coming out and saying it was a cold rainy day, is to describe it instead. The balmy air chilled Patricia as the puddle of raindrops saturated her skin or something along those lines. Hope this helps...Topic is relatable to something I had gone through, keep writing I would like to see how it turns out.
