Heartless

Is it wrong to want to hurt someone?

Sometimes I wonder

if I'm truly heartless,

 

Sometimes I smile

when I cause others pain,

 

But deep down I know

that it's only protection,

 

If I do not love

it won't hurt again.

When we are unsure of ourselves we tend to wear masks and react in 'character'. The process of maturing demands that we remove the masks and speak our own voice. That takes self-awareness borne from experience.

Your poem well describes the state of being for the young life-explorer. Pat Benetar sang, "Love is a battle field". She also said, "We are young! No one can tell us we're wrong".

We all wonder this, sometimes empathy just isn't adaptive and sometimes it's just our turn to be selfish, you timed this well. But as as species, we are pretty hard-wired to love, regardless of the possible risks. A very psychological write.

It's the simplicity which gives it its wonderful effect.
