Look in her EyesA Poem by Solitary TravelerI'm on the downward swing, and this is what I felt like writing today. Its not a happy poem. Its my life.Look in Her Eyes That look in her eyes, unthinking rage The fear creeps up, I know what's coming I'm used to this, feeling trapped Facing an animal, the one I married. Found a picture, framed so nice First kiss after wedding, a special moment My eyes were closed, enjoyed that kiss Her eyes were open. Why were they open? Another picture, another special moment First as husband and wife, a happy smile Her eyes were closed, her lips pressed tight Why wasn't she happy to be my wife? Other pictures, other moments in time My smile has faded, eyes losing their light Too many bruises, too many fights Her smile is radiant. The end is in sight. Her mother has passed, cold winter's touch The shackles broken, the last tie severed Her future her own, its bright again But for me, the darkness never ends. Last grasp at happiness, the woman I have chosen A last desperate plea, easy to ignore A new love for her, a new future path An empty pillow, love's bloom now dead. The empty nights, days without light Future dreams invested, more wasted lies Coiled rope in my hand, chair by my side I'll never forget that look in her eyes.
