52 Card Pick-upA Story by Edward leePlaying games.“Ugh, why do I even play this game?” Kevin sighed as he flipped over another card. “I never win!” Solitaire is such a lonely game. There are fifty-two cards and only one person; one very lonely person. Hell, in this case, the name really does tell it all. Flipping the cards by threes he almost seemed to will the cards to turn up, “Come on, where is the damn king of hearts?” Seven of spades! They teased him. They mocked him"never once did they please him. “Dammitt!!” the cards lifted as his words were carried on a heavy breath. “This is the stupidest card game ever!” Sure he could cheat. Who would know? He would know, He would know that fate, chance, and fifty-two pieces of laminated paper bested him. His eyes burned from staring at the cards. No longer were there numbers are shapes appearing before him, but instead blurry colors, “Black card. Black card. Black card. Red Card. Black card” there was no real pattern. The only pattern Kevin could identify is that of the repetitive nature of the cards screwing him over again. “God dammitt!” he screamed as the king of hearts appeared one card beneath the three of spades. His fury fueled his arms to flail wildly sending cards flying all across the room. “Hmmmm, hmmmm!” a soft feminine voice startled him and looking up saw his mother standing in the stairwell looking up at him. “Uh, oh hey ma.” Kevin said, trying hard to seem cool and collected. “What’s up?” “Oh, just here to watch you play fifty-two card pick up,” she responded with a bit of a smile. He looked down at the mess on his floor and started picking them up and realized, “No, this is the dumbest card game ever!” © 2010 Edward lee |
