She

She

A Poem by Eddie Deadname

She’s just so pretty

And that’s why I hate her

Her beauty is my bane

Were she ugly or she plain

It would not be so hard to wish her gone

It would not be so hard to see her go

She will never be happy

And I can never be happy while she lives

So though I love her so

And her every gaze, smile, and laugh enamours me fully

I must wish her dead

I didn’t always think her so beautiful

Once upon a time I would have seen her perish

Without a tear or second thought

But now her perfection is my obsession

So much that I sometimes wonder

Though I can never be happy in her presence

Can I ever be happy in her absence?

Or will her destruction destroy me just as surely as I know her existence will

Is the risk worth the reward?

Is the risk worth the regret?

If the price of my happiness is the murder of such beauty

Is it a happiness I deserve?

The words are those of one who sees a train wreck coming but is conflicted as to whether to get out of the way or not. Obsession is like that. One sees the danger ahead but feels powerless to avoid it because of the overwhelming desire it arouses. An interesting psychological study here.
