awakening

awakening

A Poem by Ed Fagan
"

a poem

"
break through to the surface
grasping for air...
awakened!

these relentless nightmares...

held by the despair of yesterday's emotions
crimes no punishment can absolve...

repentance of no worth.

what of this option?
gone forward with the taste of a bittersweet humility.
withered in stagnation and entropy endure far too long.

a soul begins to feel the weight of restlessness.
it was only a matter of time...

The speaker is obviously troubled, but no specifics are given. Apparently some acts of the past are regarded as unforgivable and dominate every waking hour, sleep providing no solace. The penultimate verse indicates a new option has come into consideration. The last verse does not identify it, but somehow it left this reader uneasy. Has the speaker decided to check out early?

I can completely relate to this piece. The struggle to be released and find lasting freedom from our personal demons is real whether they haunt us with insomnia or regret, desire or defeat. I enjoyed reading this.
