Part 2A Chapter by Alex Avery
Part 2
We arrive at Alice's house, venturing inside. She motions me to the table in the living room, and we sit down. Her house had to have been the best cared-for house in the entire hamlet. On outside examination, without seeing the houses hedging it into the nook that it was built upon, it seems to be a normal bungalow, in its construction. Upon peering inside, you see soft leather furniture, plush chairs, and a well cared for flooring. We sat on the couch, and I opened the book, and started to translate it for Alice. "Traditions tell of foul odors near the hill-crowning circles of
stone pillars, and of rushing airy presences to be heard faintly at
certain hours from stated points at the bottom of the great ravines; inside those great chasms, you may be able to find The Deathless One. He-Who-Never-Sleeps. For with Ancient Rites, you may be able to revive Death Hi..." My voice cuts off, and I go back and re-read it, before starting to speak again. "You may be able to revive Death Himself." I look over to Alice, looking perplexed. "Do you know what that's supposed to mean?" "Not a clue, unless it was being honest and literal." Alice says, just as confused. "Well, that is weird. The English translation is so much different. It says 'You may be able to avoid Death Himself', not revive Him." I say, scratching my forehead. Alice turns to me and closes the book gingerly. Only after she closes it do I realize that it has gotten dark. "Aw, well, I guess I'm gonna be in town for a while longer," "Well, if you want to, you can sleep here. I have a very large bed, plenty of room to share," Alice says, looking shy. "Well, I don't want to impose, but I'm gonna take you up on that offer. Thanks," I say, smiling. "Where is the bedroom? I'm gonna turn in early," I say with a yawn. "Follow me," Alice says, turning up the stairs. I follow her, and upon cresting the stairs, I see a majestic bedroom, two walls covered in shelved that were filled with dark and mysterious manuscripts. I gaze around in awe, until a giggle from Alice snaps me out of my trance. "So, this is your personal library, huh?" I say to her smiling. She looks down, and giggles before saying "Yeah, it is. You can look at it in the morning, if you like," "That would be amazing! Have you read any of these?" I respond "Only the English ones. I wish I knew Latin," she adds, smirking at me, then laughing softly. "Oops, well, I might be able to teach you, if we end up spending large amounts of time together," I say, testing her reaction. Her eyes widen in surprise, before she looks down, blushing. I laugh and lay down on the bed, sighing as my tense muscles relax. "Very comfy bed, I have to commend you on your choice of furniture," "Thanks. I'm gonna get undressed, so don't go into that bathroom, okay?" She asks. "No problem. I sleep in my pants anyways," I say to her as she walks into the bathroom, carrying her nightgown. I am almost asleep when she walks out, the soft white nightgown casting a soft glow from the moonlight. She walks over to the bed and crawls in next to me, and sighs contently. "Good night, Alex." "Good night, Alice," I reply, falling into the throes of my reoccurring nightmare.
