At the age of ten

At the age of ten

A Poem by John Harden
"

I volunteer a lot and I meet so many interesting people. And I've experienced so much. Good and bad. This poem...more of the bad.

"

So I know this kid.

I know this kid who has dreams.
Dreams bigger than himself.

I met him at a shelter,
along with his sister and mother.

I volunteer there twice a month,
which really isn’t enough.

I became attached to them,
visiting whenever I can.

Hard times fell on the trio.
but they comfort each other.

The boy only 10, tries
hard to help his mom.

Learning as much as he can,
so that he can grow to be a man.

So inspiring the way he talks,
even at four, his sister tries to imitate his walk.

That was three years ago.
A lot has change since then.

His mom back on her feet,
making more than ends meet.

His sister is seven
And says he’s in heaven.

He was coming by my house to say hi
I didn’t think I would be saying good-…

He died in the street, by a
“tipsy” driver who did not see.

He wanted to grow up to be a man,
But I cosidered him one when I knew him at 10.
