Maze

Maze

A Poem by Echo086

I am a rat in a maze.
My hubris leads me
Down paths I think I've solved before.
With each step my fear grows.
I am only halfway,
The anxiety bubbles up,
I am only halfway.

I twist and turn through the labyrinth.
The researcher has placed thorns
All throughout my path.
Somehow I step on all of them.
I am only halfway,
The pain bubbles up,
I am only halfway.

I don't know what lies at the end
Nor, anymore, where I started.
I believed it was best to escape,
But now I'm far from sure.
I am only halfway,
What did I forsake,
I am only halfway.

I think of you through this maze.
My mind wanders at turn 537.
A thorn impales me
And I slip from consciousness.
I am only halfway,
I will die in this maze,
I am only halfway
