Surfer DudeA Poem by Earl SchumackerSurfing the universeSurfer Dude
Surfer dude pounds the high waves parallax Oceans warm the cockles of his heart Waxed as fine as the boards he rides upon Flipped to the horizon upside down relaxed
Tucked inside a wave, hunched over as if old Blonde curls through translucence A ghostly figure of a tsunami man appears Tanned to perfection for a grand slam landing
Surfer dude rides Hawaii’s gnarly waves Too many i’s and islands cause suspicion But he braves them anyway to summer’s end
A tubular event for hanging 10s Sunlight reveals a shadow, a bandanna red Emerging with the moving tunnel’s warrior
The thin waves roll on to Jupiter, to Neptune A thought left behind recalls a tiny spot called Earth A syllabicated rapture of a red bandanna lost When you forget, you forget the wet Silhouetted through the universe’s fractured web
To Saturn's rings he surfs the tidal boundaries On jet boards as dangerous as that seems Misinterpretations of collisions come quickly Disintegrations occur more frequently Ice and rock debris aren’t always friendly Impacts are likely in the dead of forever night
Vast cosmic seas explode in motion Have no mercy once agitated No memory of paradise equipped with fish No forgiveness for the dumb among us For the vertical minded and their kind But there are endless waves of light
A chance to be paralyzed has passed blonde by Immortals never die before sunrise Turtled up in his rubber suit Covered cozy shooting through the stars He sometimes yawns but then remembers There is no oxygen in open space
Surfer dude pounds the high waves parallax Oceans warm the cockles of his heart Waxed as fine as the boards he rides upon Flipped to the horizon upside down beyond
