In The Underneath

In The Underneath

A Poem by Earl Schumacker
"

Two lovers kept alive inside the winter's deep

"

In The Underneath

Wood logs burn on inside the fireplace

Smoke builds within the chimney keep

Escapes into the bitter icy cold outside

With secrets regarding two lovers kept

Curled up like the cozy couple in the bed

Underneath the frozen moon is snow

Beneath the comforting quilt is love

Warm bodies breathe together in their quest

A small cabin and some bread is all they have

Nothing to deprive them of their sleep

Unless you count the matter of their passion

Which goes without question in the underneath

This one builds up an ambiance very nicely, enabling us to contrast the winter's cold with the warmth inside the cabin. Verse 2 enhances the picture established in its predecessor, bringing in a touch of erotica to stimulate our interest. The poet wisely cuts it off shortly after its introduction, leaving the imagination to interpret the rest. Very nice piece.
