![]() Turtle IslandA Poem by Earl Schumacker![]() A place where time moves slow and bombs move fast![]() Turtle Island See-through turquoise waters call It must be a holiday we forgot Sidled up on laps against the shore Like two old friends just holding hands After hurricanes turn from rage to calm
Tortoise tracks like hieroglyphics scratched Etched signs of tiny creatures over time Over surfaces, spread patterns born to die in shells Delicate traces of a place long gone fossilized
Soft winds protect smooth surfaced sands Glowing white from a constant friendly sun As palms bow down with other trees to pray To a speck of dirt on its way to being lost Oceans wave good-bye to godless islands
An innocent dot, a perfect nothing Emerged so long ago on seas as vast So vast as to forget its place on any map Remote and distant, hiding from existence
No need to worry about mortality today This is a designated test site for nuclear explosions A location for slow moving creatures lost at sea For strange objects falling from the sky A place to die called Turtle Island
