Civilization

Civilization

A Poem by Earl Schumacker
"

Building living spaces for future generations

"

Civilization

Stones carved by oblivion's first cut

Stand erect, intricate in their design

Shaped, created, generated by the sentient

By creatures that once crawled up from the mud

Now builders, the lot they have become

The building blocks of life

Great walls rise against the dawn

Sun settles all while moving on

The smooth surface stands majestic, tall

Structures perfected over time's hard work

Ideas become more solid than dirt and dust

Flow into concrete cities built to last

Buildings crumble, replaced, evolve again

Glass and metals reach the sky high rise

Wars dictate color, design and purpose

Children inherit empty spaces vacated

Empires fill in the void of the survivors

Not satisfied to simply be alive

Every stone must be turned over

Every castle must be handed down

With power to the young on history's command

For a second chance to get it right

Workers find perfection in the transformation

Illusions preserved in rock as living spaces

Must become fine art and beauty for the future

Over there still being born, erected out of place
