Mountain I & II

Mountain I & II

A Poem by EMG

I.

A mountain approaches, I know we cannot pass

My hand grips yours; tight, fingers interlocked

Our steps crescendo up the rocky face

We have reached the summit! Yet, something is wrong

Our hands slip, I turn

Your face flashes to fear

I see you fall down, down, down

I must continue down the mountainside, alone.

II.

Up the path of rock and dirt

We are tired, worn thin,

Bone’s brittle and cold.

Quite cold, now, save your warm hand.

Our steps crescendo up the stairs,

Each step a culmination of our entire effort.

Dragging one another to the summit hand in hand.

The tip is where we’ve reached, our destination is close now

Yet! Quick, Hold fast love!

Our hands slip, I grab out again and again but she is nowhere to be found.

I see her fall, down.

I must continue down the mountainside alone.
