The Night Flies ByA Poem by Elsie DugganA poem about time, the hours of waiting anticipated by a loved one leaving for service to their countryI still feel his touch upon my face As he kissed my lips, I cried For will he ever come back to me My fears are wrapped inside
This aching heart that longs for him already and he has just left me How will I stand the minutes the hours The years perhaps eternity
Until I feel his touch again the lingering of his lips When will the waiting cease to be Until he is back from trips
Off to the war to fight for me That is the way he put it I am selfish when I think why him Why me , my soul cries, with fires lit
Deep inside my body with his warmth still felt I look down at the street below I see the taxi waiting for him I see him close the door , it takes off slow
And then it disappears into the night I see the brightening of the skies The dawn is fast approaching Oh Please Lord hear my cries
Bring him safely home to me again Hold him gently in your arms I know you have so many to look out for Please keep him free from harm
And as I'm praying these tearful prayers I know much that I am asking For the Lord is overcome with prayers It is his job and everlasting
I count my blessings as I try to sleep Knowing my heart and soul have flown away And into dreamland I escape My lover holds me in his arms, and I hear him say
Rest easy darling, I will be back I'll never leave you alone , I'll be right here by your side For your heart is my true home © 2008 Elsie Duggan |
