The PromiseA Poem by Elsie DugganA poem dedicated to my 57 year marriage with my husband,We stood together
Boy and Girl
Looked into each other's eyes
And make that lovely promise
To God and all our family listening
That we would stay together
Until death do us part
That we would keep each other safe
And to each other would be true
Through laughter and through tears
In good times and in bad
To love for all eternity
To strive for peace and harmony
Hold unto each other faithfully
Go through life together
Hang on to one another when things got really tough
We became no longer boy and girl
But emerged as man and wife
And lived a life so wonderful
Had children that had children
A life carved by ourselves
Had ups and downs like everyone
We survived such awful things
But together we were strong
There was nothing we couldn't do
As long as there were we as two
How did that time go so awfully fast
So many years just scurried by
We always thought there would be time
So many things left to do
But like all good things there came an end
Not to the love nor the promise given
For I am still here keeping our words intact
The forever part is real
You had to leave, it was not your choice
I said goodbye for just awhile
You wait for me to join you
And when the time for me arrives
I will be with you again
And then these eyes that fill with tears
Will once again just smile © 2008 Elsie DugganFeatured Review
