A Chapter by ED Adams

I didn’t do much other then skip school and run around. I avoided “my maker” as I now called him after hearing Lysander call him that. I kept an eye out for Lysander but he never showed. I slept a lot in during the day but at night I couldn’t sleep if you paid me. I tried to hang out with Serena but her time was spent trapped in a world of hardcore schooling that she convinced herself she could survive. My parents still gone I had a lot of me time. I hated me time. I ate a large amounts of food, watched movies and TV, ran around the town, and I still had too much time on my hands.
I finally convinced Serena to spend the night Friday night. I was all ready to watch movies; she was going to get them. I was going to supply the food. It was sort of my last girl’s night. According to Lysander it was going to be a lot of guy’s nights out. I wasn’t the best at figuring guys out so this whole situation was going to be rough. So I was really excited for Friday.
On Friday night Serena came over bringing me a lot of paper work and books, a few DVDs snuck themselves in too. She dropped it all on the table in the living room and looked at me suspiciously. I was slightly confused and sat down opposite of her.
“You’ve skipped a week of school? I snuck out of the nerd wing to come see you during lunch and everyone said you’ve been skipping school.” She quickly made two piles of books and paper work. “I went to your teachers and got your home work. This is your pile and here’s mine.”
“How did you sneak out of the nerd wing?” I looked at the two piles. I’d missed a week of school and the piles where the same size. If anything her pile was slightly bigger.
“We can work on it while we wait for food.” She already started to flip open her books. “Oh I thought it was going to be hard to get out of there, it wasn’t. All I had to do was fake cramps and say I was having “Lady Problems”. After that I couldn’t leave fast enough for them.” She was already flipping open books. “Go order the food and get back here and work.”
I followed orders without flinching. She wasn’t to be argued with and I didn’t want to put up a fight. I walked into the kitchen and ordered Chinese food from our favorite place. Then after I walked back and started to work on my pile. Most of it was paper work so I blazed thru it. It was all pretty simple, nothing too hard. I finished most of it before the food even arrived; I jumped up and paid at the door. When I brought it into the living room Serena didn’t even look up.
“You need to stop working now. Come on foods here and I’m putting on one of the movies you brought.” I placed the food on the table and took all the homework off the table and placed it off to the side. “Where are the DVDs?”
“Which one? Since you brought up the old Geek werewolf I brought the underworld movies.” She smiled at me. “Here’s the rise of the Lycans.”
I gave an awkward smile and took the movie. So much for not thinking about Monday. I put the movie in and sat back down. As the credits at the beginning of the movie started I shoved Sweet and Sour Chicken into my mouth. Serena started eating the egg rolls. The movies gave me more to think about.
If werewolves are really real, what else was? Did we have a war with any of them? If I was a werewolf did that make me immortal? Lysander said he was middle aged when he was turned, he’s only twenty two. I started to hyperventilate; Serena saw this and freaked out. She turned the TV off and ran out off the room near screaming volume looking for something. The room was spinning for me now, my mind wouldn’t shut up. Lysander was married? Why wasn’t he my maker? How was I going to live? She came back in moments later came running back in the room shoving a brown paper bag into my hand. I used it quickly breathing in and out, watching the bag grow and shrink.
“I didn’t think these movies freaked you out. I’m sorry. I thought I was I scaredy cat when it came to movies.” Serena patently waited for me to reply.
“It wasn’t a movie that freaked me out.” That was sort of true. “I wanted to talk to you about something. It’s just… you won’t believe me.”
“Tell me. You’re acting all crazy.” Serena said with a worried smile.
“I’m…” I was going to tell her the truth. I was going to lay it all down and hope for the best. Let the chips fall where they may as the saying goes. I would have told her everything then and there but the doorbell rang. Serena got up and opened the door.
“Hi, I’m Lysander. Is ah, oh there you are.” Lysander walked up to me and hugged me and kissed on the cheek. This was more than all the physical contact we’d had in the past combined. I was shocked. “I know I should have waited until you called but… I couldn’t. This is your friend?”
“Serena St. James, Lysander? Like Shakespeare right?” Serena said, she was staring him down. Lysander seemed calm and composed.
“Yes, umm old family name though, had nothing to do with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I was named after an uncle who died as a child.”  Lysander led us into the living room, his arm over my shoulder. He seemed so natural at this and I was as stiff as a board. Serena seemed confused over the whole matter. “So I’m guessing Evangeline here never told you about me.”
“No. She didn’t.” She looked at me and I gave a shrug and a smile. “I’m the reason she’s been skipping. I told her she really shouldn’t but you try and stop her. We met while she was at that party. I gave her a lift home; she looked like she needed one. Never thought I’d see her again, well few days later she got coffee from this place I was at and I said hi to her. She totally blew me off. I said hey that’s not very nice, I did give you a lift home. She said what? And then yeah you know the rest.”
“No, I don’t.” She paused and continued to stare at us. It was weird to think that I referred to Lysander and myself as an “us”. Just as that thought crossed my mind Lysander held my hand and kissed it. “So you’re dating?”
“More than that, he’s my fiancé.” I said suddenly remembering the pre planned lie for my parents, which must be the plan Lysander was leaning towards now. I didn’t like lying to anyone but I did take four years of theater class at my high school. I can lie well I just didn’t like to. “He and I are getting married.”
“What?!” She stood up and walked around the living room. “No, no way. This is insane. Who is he? How old are you? Where did you come from?”
“Well okay my name is Lysander Spiro and…” He started.
“You’re Li…” Lysander jumped up and shouted over her.
“Ah yes he is my family. We moved down here from Washington. I’m twenty according to the ID in my wallet and I love this girl here. Well we were planning to elope and I don’t really have anyone I want there besides Eve. Would you want to be the witness?”
“When?” She asked slowly.
“Now.” He replied. What was my simple Friday night turning into? “I own a house. I inherited it and I have money. I can provide. Eve wanna get your things? We can head to the Hummer.”
“Tonight?” I looked at Lysander, he wasn’t bluffing.
“Eve! You cannot get married in sweatpants.” Serena stated then dragged me upstairs and dug thru my closet. She drug out two dresses then tossed one at me and then started to put the other one on. I put mine on, though I always felt like a goon when I had a dress on. It was the white maxi dress from Victoria Secrets that I planned to wear for my graduation. She then put make on herself. I waited for her to be done but she didn’t put away the makeup. “You’re next.”
I sighed but no point in fighting Serena when she’s like this. I sat and my face was covered in makeup. She was smiling a calm yet forced smile. She pushed me towards my full length mirror to look at myself. I looked really beautiful; Serena then started fussing with my hair. She suddenly stopped and walked out of the room without a word. I continued doing my hair after about twenty minutes I finished my hair and was strapping on some nice white heels that matched the dress perfectly and walked downstairs. No one was there.
I turned around to walk back upstairs when Lysander walked down in a suit without the jacket. It was an off black vest and pants with a white collar button up top with the sleeves rolled up. His perfectly tied tie was grey and made his blue eyes look even brighter than before. He also had a thin silver chain pocket watch that tucked into his vest pocket.
“I tried to make him wear a jacket but he was too hot.” Serena rolled her eyes as she passed him on the stairs. “I couldn’t let you too get married like you where and well your mom would have killed me if I didn’t take pictures. Though your mother is going to kill you for not letting her be here for it.”
“Yeah she probably will.” She opened the door for the both of us and Lysander linked arms with me to the Hummer. As we drove to where ever Lysander was drive us too I thought about this whole marriage thing. How real was it? I sighed, the more legitimate the better because Serena was here and planning on pictures. But on the other hand, my family was technically Catholic and well marriage was for life divorce was a sin. Then again becoming a werewolf was probably a sin too.
The tiny chapel Lysander drove us to was perfect in every way. Even in the dark it looked safe and welcoming. Walked to the door and pushed it open, a tall burly man with a think beard was wiping down the podium at the back of the small chapel. He looked up and waved us back. Lysander linked arms with me again and lead me to the man. I looked around as we walked down the aisle and spotted a small woman with large grey streaks in her hair on a piano.
“Hi-ya folks. You’re Lysander Spiro right?” Lysander shook his hand.
“Yes, and this is Eve. So is everything ready?”
“Yes. Did you want to do the walk down the aisle to the music? I brought my wife to be a witness or a pianist.” I shook my head, I dreaded people looking at me like that. Don’t get me wrong, I can get on stage and recite a monologue but only if it’s me being someone else. I didn’t like people staring at me being me because I didn’t trust people to let them see the real me. The priest set us up explained everything and we got started. I still didn’t know how binding this was as a marriage. The Priest started by saying all the usual things, the wife played softly in the background. It was romantic in every way except that it wasn’t really real.
“Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?” I looked up at the priest for the first time. It took me more than a minute to realize he was talking to me.
“I do?” I said it like a question, because I wasn’t sure. The priest then asked Lysander the same question except the husband bit was taken out and instead said wife.
“I do.” He said it calmly and clearly.
“I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.” The priest waved his arms in the air and waited for us to kiss. Lysander leaned in and kissed me quickly but gently on the lips.  I looked down at my ring finger and saw a ring. I didn’t even remember him putting it on my finger. Serena smiled at me and came up to hug me.
“Guess you’re married.” She hug Lysander then. “I don’t know you but if you hurt her, I’ll cut you junk off and make you wear it like a necklace. So, umm, I guess I’ll go back to my house, you two will probably want to umm be alone?”
Right like Lysander was going to do that with me, even if I wanted him to. We all walked back to the Hummer. Lysander drove Serena home and then me. He parked it in the drive way and followed me in.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“We need to talk.” Wow under an hour of being marred and we already had troubles. Shortest honeymoon ever. “You almost told her. I thought I made it clear you shouldn’t tell. Luckily I planned to call that guy to have a fake wedding or things could have been tricky to explain to your friend.”
“Well I needed to talk to somebody about it. You aren’t being completely open about things and she wouldn’t tell anybody. Besides how did you know I was going to tell her?” I was getting angry.
“I have been watching over you since you where bit, I was lessoning in. Good hearing. You’ll understand…” I didn’t let him finish.
“On Monday. I wasn’t going to ask until then, I was being patient. But YOU crashed my girl’s night. Now my best friend thinks I’m married to you, and how real was that whole thing? Are we really married!?” I was turning red.
“We are married by human standards. Yes but not by our standards. Werewolf weddings are more than a half hearted whim that weddings have turned into. If we divorced your friend wouldn’t bat an eye at that. If you and I were married by werewolf standards divorce wouldn’t be an option.”
“I’m married to you? Screw werewolf standards! I’m married to you? Oh my god, I’m married to you? A few weeks ago I was slightly normal, I may have been messed up but that is normal for teens. I’m now married? I’m a werewolf and married. How did this happen? What happened to me!? Tell me damn it!” Lysander snapped after my words.
“You want to know what happened to you? Liam!” He yelled. Suddenly my body collapsed. Everything he’d told me about what would happen after I heard his name happened. The lost nights memories flashed thru my mind as if it were that night. I was in the log cabin, it was that night. Liam was lying down next to me on the fur rug. I heard the fire crackling in the background as he tucked my tangled muddy hair behind my ear. My body felt cold even though the fire was right at my back. My clothing was soaked in my own blood; my breathing was uneven and shaky.
"Why are you going to bite me? I never did anything to you." I said.
"You'll wake up in your bed, you'll forget this night, and you'll find me when you're ready." Liam then bit my wrist. I long flowing pain seared my whole body. I wanted to throw up the pain or just to die. I felt everything, my heart beating so fast my body wanted to fight but couldn’t. I wasn't sure if I was screaming, if felt like scalps where slowly and deeply dragging themselves all inside of me. My skin suddenly felt as if it were on fire like lava was being poured all over my body. Liam held on to me, holding me firmly and gently at the same time. I wanted to rip my flesh off and he held my hands away from doing that. Moments felt like hours, hours felt like days.
“You’ll hear my name and remember this night. Liam will be the trigger for your memory.” Liam said like a soothing song.
As quickly as the pain came surging through my body, it was gone. My body felt weak but healthy. I was shaking as Liam cleaned off my face with a washcloth. He examined my wrist and then walked away from me. I didn’t want him to leave. I was alone and afraid of that feeling, Liam came back into the room, this time a man came back with him.
“What next Lysander?” Liam looked so young in that moment, he was afraid too. Lysander looked down at me, his eyes seemed to be analyzing the moment. He took his time and walked around me a few times bending down to take a closer look at me. I would have gotten up or even spoke if I thought I could, but my body wouldn’t allow that slightest movement. Lysander walked over to the couch and casually sat down and wiped his face.
“Soon she will be able to walk and talk. She now one of us. She needs to get out of her clothing. You can burn them in the fire place. Ah, there are some plain white shirts up stairs; they are large enough to be a night gown. Get her in one and put her in the Hummer. I’ll drive her home and we’ll go from there.”
“Pappou thank you.” Liam lifted my body with one arm.
“You haven’t called me that in a while.” Lysander said before exiting the room. Liam helped me walk around the room a few times till I could do it alone. Walking felt wonderful, it was like I had never done it before.
“Can you take off the stuff your wearing? I’m going to go get you something else to wear.” Liam left the room and I took off my clothing. I was very naked, and that thought passed as Liam walked back into the room. Held is eyes shut with one hand and held out a shirt to me. I took it and tossed it on.
“You can look now.” I spoke; the sound of my voice startled me. Liam opened his eyes and smirked at me. He then led me to the large Hummer and I got in. Lysander was in the driver’s seat. He looked at me with a kind smile.
“Do you know where you live?” The simple question took me by surprise. It took me a while to think of where my home was. But it finally came to me.
“2684 Fleet Street, Sam’s Valley 97503 Oregon.” I smiled, I figured out where I lived. “That’s where I live! I can’t believe I almost I forgot, is that weird?”
“Not at all. You’re doing just fine.” Lysander smiled as he turned the Hummer on. As he drove I closed my eyes. My whole body was so tired I leaned the black leather back and closed my eyes, suddenly I was asleep.
